Spammers have become more and more clever over the years. Sometimes just opening a spam e-mail will alert the spammer that you have responded. This of course results in getting even more spam. You can set your e-mail to block images and even links. This will thwart some of the alerts the spammer receives.

An excellent way to avoid spam e-mail is to sign up for the site of your interest with a pseudo e-mail address and name. Basically, you create an account which you will use ONLY for signing up with a specific site or sites.

Naturally, the best option is to only give out your e-mail address to people you trust, and be wary of which sites you give your e-mail address to. This will reduce the risk of your e-mail address being “harvested” for use by spammers.

People are more likely to worry more about having their friend’s e-mail blocked then they are about spam getting through. Some e-mail companies let users have partial control over the spam settings. This gives us more power to choose what we will allow and what we won’t.
